History of Our Lady of Hope Children's Home
In 1997 Fr. Roland Desine started the first diocesan children's home in the Mandeville Diocese, Jamaica. For several years The Daughters of Mary directed the home. When these sisters were recalled to Canada in July of 2001, Fr. Dessine became the full time director. In January of 2002 the Assumption Sisters of Nairobi sent two sisters to help. They are assisted by six Jamaican staff members in the care and teaching of 30+ children ages six months to 13 years. The purpose of the home is to provide a place for children to grow in a family atmosphere. Volunteers from many parts of the world come to help for a few weeks to several months or years.
The children are taught responsibility by doing chores such as cleaning up after meals and caring for the Home's livestock (pet rabbits, birds, pigs and chickens). See the galleries for examples of their activities and schooling. Education in Jamaica begins in Basic school at age three and continues through Elementary (grades 1-5) and High School. The Children's Home provides "home school" classes for basic and elementary grades. At 6th Grade (High School) they will attend a Catholic High School.
